Devrai Rock Dhokra
Devrai Art Village is the birth place of Devrai Rock Dhokra. In the Rock Dhokra process, stone and Brass fuse together using the lost wax technique under stringent temperature conditions to form a unified whole. The artist’s eye is apparent in the visualisation of a tangible shape around a core piece of rock. The use of sculpted stone now has given a new dimension to our Rock Dhokra creations.
Beaten Iron Craft
Taking inspiration from the traditional iron craft of Bastar, the iron craft here evolves into many new avatars! Its combination with other mediums such as wood, stone, as part of a painting on canvas, or even infusion with metals such as brass and copper, each piece of iron craft at Devrai reflects the coming together of imagination, inspiration and the skilled hand of an age old tradition.
Fusion Dhokra
Our path breaking innovation of Rock Dhokra has set us on a trail of new fusion adventures with other mediums such as terra cotta, ceramic, glass and even other metals. Typically brass patterns and other embellishments are fused with a basic core of another medium as an integral part of the design idea. We are also exploring inlay work on terra cotta, ceramic and concrete.
Metal murals and paintings
The metal mural range is made using the molten brass poured on the ground to form abstract shapes. It is often a combination of these abstract shapes with some hand crafted ones as an integral part of a painting on canvas. These creations bring memories of the beginnings of Time, when the Earth was a ball of magma. This series is a tribute to Shakti, the primeval source of energy, that manifests in all creation.
Tumba Art
There has been a metamorphosis in the traditional dried gourd craft at Devrai. We have lamps with different design patterns such as Mandala art, nature inspired motifs, stories and myths etched on the surface. Tumba has been put to many other uses as well – we have flower vases, the bigger ones have even turned into wine and beer casks with taps! Draped in fabric, Tumbas have even been turned into puppets. As lamps, they tell stories in mesmerising patterns of light and shadow but as puppets, they transport us into a different world altogether.
Organic Casting
Nature not only inspires us, it often becomes the very substance of our design ideas. We have discovered how to replicate the patterns and textures in nature by directly casting them. Thus leaves and grass, branches and bark, fruits and seeds or even seashells get transformed into metal.
Jewellery Art
One knows of jewellery made with precious or semi-precious stones – but jewellery with pebbles or pieces of broken crockery and pottery? Everything goes into the melting pot of our fantasies and emerges as valuable, wearable art.
Natural Painting
Using dried flowers, leaves, grasses and even the bark of trees, a gamut of themes, stories and designs are explored. These glass framed paintings bring in a bit of wilderness and the exuberance of nature into our homes.
Installations and Commissioned Work
We create and even customize for our clients, large installations for the outdoors and indoors, garden sculptures and mural ideas. Stories and myths are explored in expansive multi-media panels using metal, stone or fiber glass.
